Tharsis Core Shed Open Day
The Tharsis camp opens its core shed to visitors for one day. Long racks of freshly split core from the Tharsis Dysprosium Dykes are laid out, from grey basalt to the pale carbonatite sheets that carry 310 g/t dysprosium.
Drill Master Bastien Kowalczyk takes groups out to the active Corehound Deep Core Drill rig to see a run come up from depth and explains how directional drilling lets one pad reach three dykes. Back in the shed, Apprentice Master Wiremu Tane shows how his trainees log lithology, mark assay intervals and photograph each box for the Ceres Core Library.
The day also includes a look at the Thumper Seismic Mapper whose reflection profiles first found the dykes. Families and students are welcome; under-sixteens must be accompanied.
